A Short History of West Linn’s Historic City Hall
Built in 1936, the building was was West Linn’s first permanent city hall after the city rented space in the Train Depot, which was demolished long ago. The flexible and frugal design resulted in restrained frills and gave a “boxy” appearance consonant with the Depression era need to be judiciously economical. Being flexible meant the building served many masters, including a grocery store and meat market; the City Police; and the library in addition to city offices.
By the 1990’s, any city offices were moved to the current City Hall, and the building was used exclusively by the Police until 2014. Once the Police force moved to their new home, the building sat vacant, a relic of times past. That is until members of the Willamette Falls & Landings Heritage Area Coalition, especially the former Executive Director Siobhan Loughran Taylor, saw the potential of this space as the future headquarters for the proposed National Heritage Area along the Willamette River.
In 2021, Historic City Hall was placed on the National Register for Historic Places. In 2024, the Coalition and the City of West Linn broke ground on the renovation project that will update the building and allow it to continue to serve it’s community for generations to come under the stewardship of the Coalition.
