Dear Chair Smith and County Commissioners,
The Willamette Falls & Landings Heritage Area Coalition (WFLHAC) is an Oregon Non-Profit Corporation, with a large board of directors representing key stakeholders and experienced professionals in government, business, industry, tourism, arts, heritage, and historic preservation. The Coalition leads efforts to enhance, assist and promote Oregon’s Willamette Falls Heritage Area (and proposed Willamette Falls & Landings National Heritage Area) as sources of pride and prosperity, where visitors and residents alike can experience the natural wonders, stories and abundance of culture and history in this nationally significant place.
The hateful, inflammatory views expressed by County Commissioner Mark Shull towards Muslims, immigrants, and other marginalized groups, have damaged the reputation of Clackamas County, and hamper our efforts to promote the County and greater Heritage Area as a welcoming and inclusive place to visit. As long as Mr. Shull remains on the commission, the County and Heritage Area will continue to suffer negative consequences. We ask Commissioner Shull to resign immediately with the best interests of Clackamas County and the greater Heritage area in mind.
Willamette Falls and Landings Heritage Area Coalition is committed to incorporating the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the governance and operations of our organization and within the Heritage Area. We promote equity and diversity because it is our belief, we all grow stronger together when we understand, respect, and embrace our shared and unique heritage, diverse traditions, cultures, and experiences.
Respectfully,
Jon Gustafson
Board President
